This set is inspired by the pervasive and invasive nature of beauty ideals on women. Retouching techniques and photo manipulation often used to sculpt and polish images to unattainable levels of perfection are instead used to highlight the internalisation of these external pressures. "Beauty is pain" is not just physical–there is a real and wide reaching impact on mental health, especially on teenage girls and young women. Since this set was made, there has been a larger conversation about these negative impacts and editing and retouching have been approached with more responsibility.
"Self-destruction:: 'everyday' beauty tools are recontextualised as weapons and torture devices.
"Comparison": the dangerous spiral of obsessive analysis and comparison.
"All grown up": the adultification of beauty ideals for teenagers.
